Berlin in 2 days

March 14, 2022

To visit Berlin, we must take into account the historical context of its different monuments and neighborhoods. We will start with the Brandenburg Gate, which represents the triumph of peace over weapons, inaugurated in 1791, is 26 meters high and resembles the Athenian Acropolis. From the Brandenburg Gate we will go to the German Parliament, an imposing classical building with its dome designed by the English architect Norman Foster, a landmark that can not be missed. We will return to the Brandenburg Gate to continue our tour to the Holocaust Memorial passing through the Pariser Platz, emblematic square in the center of Berlin that for a long time was the largest and most important.

The Holocaust Memorial, which commemorates the Jews murdered during World War II, is made up of 2,711 concrete blocks of varying heights that achieve the poignant effect they seek. From there we will depart to the New Guard along the Unter Den Linden, Berlin’s main avenue that runs from the Brandenburg Gate to the Cathedral.

We will cross the Bebelplatz, a historic and tragic square where the book burning took place on the night of May 10, 1933. We continue to the New Guard, a building completed in 1818, designed by the German architect Friedrich Schinkel. Today it is a monument that remembers the victims of the war and the dictatorship, inside it has sculptural works such as Mother with dead child by Kathe Kollwitz. Next to the New Guard, is the Museum of German History, an important point to stop and visit a more than interesting sample of German culture and history. From there we will cross the river to reach the Berlin Cathedral, built between 1894 and 1905, today is the most important religious building with 115 meters high from its dome you get one of the best panoramic views of the city.

We will continue our journey to the Old Museum (Altes Museum), considered one of the best examples of neoclassicism, which was inaugurated in 1828 and converted into a museum in 1830. Next to the Old Museum is the New Museum (Neues Museum), with exhibits on ancient Egypt where highlights the sculpture of Queen Nefertiti and collections of prehistory and history.

Another trip, another country… this time,Paris. Boys that are selfish, troublesome, and disobedient, in one ride or journey, find usually that their company is not desired a second time. In order to make you perfectly acquainted with the whole of the process, I shall transcribe, for your satisfaction, that part of the Report immediately connected with the art of restoring damaged or decayed paintings. The French capital-Paris boasts the most famous, and expensive, hotels on the planet, but you don’t have to splash out on a room to get in. There, architecture predominates over sculpture; here, sculpture over architecture. Paris Hotel art might never improve, but at least in Paris, hotel food is becoming artistry… As a rich man is able to live in his palace surrounded by luxury and the greatest comfort, so should a poor man be able to have the necessaries of life. But, after all…Paris has the magic of the romantic.

Rome, Italy…The poison of travel seems fresh as the dew and the thirsty soul drinks it longing; after a fleeting intoxication, the drinker makes sick and a slow death dies.  The scene is commonplace.  Lime-green a woman slices over to the cafe, all glass, all reflection as a red sun burns down to the horizon.
Colosseum: Your heart will feel contentment of finding it and your soul renovated when seeing it.  This massive amphitheatre could seat 50,000 and was the venue for the gory gladiator and wild animal fights so loved by the Romans. It has no centre, no significance, or, if any, one beyond our ken.  He passed hours in their company, how much he loved those birds and their soft ways he couldn’t even say. Piazza Navona: The focal points of this elegant piazza are the three fountains, of which Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is the most extravagant.

Exploring Italy: Verona

September 5, 2009

Verona. The traveler doesn’t know if fruit of the chance or of the instinct, in many bars it can perceive presences, at least, curious. Before sitting down to a table, it travels with the look the corners, the windows or the decoration, looking for in that place, almost without thinking it, some reference that he makes it family, recognizable. Without doubts that the bars of Verona are those that more resonances deposit in their senses. In March I visited Verona invited by the local government. I visited a trendy movie house shows art films and fashionable retro classics with cheap tickets. The opportunities for exploring places are unlimited, the most pleasant area to explore on foot is the little town of Mantua. Good news for the tourists: the airfares are cheap in a low cost airlines. If you want to visit Verona, the best flights are provided by Ryanair and Meridiana.
