Rome, Italy…The poison of travel seems fresh as the dew and the thirsty soul drinks it longing; after a fleeting intoxication, the drinker makes sick and a slow death dies.  The scene is commonplace.  Lime-green a woman slices over to the cafe, all glass, all reflection as a red sun burns down to the horizon.
Colosseum: Your heart will feel contentment of finding it and your soul renovated when seeing it.  This massive amphitheatre could seat 50,000 and was the venue for the gory gladiator and wild animal fights so loved by the Romans. It has no centre, no significance, or, if any, one beyond our ken.  He passed hours in their company, how much he loved those birds and their soft ways he couldn’t even say. Piazza Navona: The focal points of this elegant piazza are the three fountains, of which Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is the most extravagant.

Exploring Italy: Verona

September 5, 2009

Verona. The traveler doesn’t know if fruit of the chance or of the instinct, in many bars it can perceive presences, at least, curious. Before sitting down to a table, it travels with the look the corners, the windows or the decoration, looking for in that place, almost without thinking it, some reference that he makes it family, recognizable. Without doubts that the bars of Verona are those that more resonances deposit in their senses. In March I visited Verona invited by the local government. I visited a trendy movie house shows art films and fashionable retro classics with cheap tickets. The opportunities for exploring places are unlimited, the most pleasant area to explore on foot is the little town of Mantua. Good news for the tourists: the airfares are cheap in a low cost airlines. If you want to visit Verona, the best flights are provided by Ryanair and Meridiana.

The new edition of the large visual arts festival PHotoEspaña kicks off on June, and this year it brings with a new message; the everyday has triumphed over more sensational art. In this month, over 60 arts centres will host  a total of 72 exhibitions featuring the works  of 248 photographers from 40 countries.

The famous fiesta of Fogueres de Sant Joan ( or Fogatas de San Juan) is hold between the 20th and 24th of June. These are the Alicante’s main fiestas and they have been declared an event of International Tourist Interest. The ancestral tradition of burning useless objects with the arrival of the summer solstice around the San Juan Bautista Festival, led to festivals featuring colour, gunpowder and fire from 1928 onwards in which the whole city takes part. Streets are closed and the city centre practically comes to a standstill for 5 days as it is taken over by the party spirit. You must assist to this event!!

Ibiza is the center of entertainments and society life in Europe. But it is also a city with its own identity, with a nice historical centre and several interesting areas. Sa Penya, the heart of the old port of Ibiza and the ideal place for those who love wandering, is rich in typical small shops, cobbled paved passages and alleys. Light-heartedness is constantly in the air. The ancient high city, D’Alt Vila, is the primitive nucleus of Ibiza. It was built on a rocky high ground and it was surrounded by walls (built in the XVI century by Philip II), today it is the oldest fortress in Europe. Today it hosts the Museum of Contemporary Arts.
